The Sr. Vendor Quality Scientist will drive efficiency, improvement, and maintain ongoing compliance of Mizkan America ingredient vendor programs to assure food safety and quality. Incumbent will ensure flawless execution of supplier verification activities and management of relationships to drive on-going compliance with internal and external partners. The individual will also make relevant technical/scientific decision related to the assign responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This is a technical leadership position in the Vendor Quality group.
  • Leads processes for the qualification and performance improvement of suppliers (ingredient, packaging and copackers). Processes to include but not limited to risk assessments, specification approval, testing requirements, validation/verification of food safety documents and vendor audits.
  • Interact with internal and external subject experts to ensure the contents of vendor provided data sheets are sufficient and appropriate.
  • Control the ingredient and ingredient vendor documentation database to assure relevant documents are accurate and current, and in compliance with regulations and Mizkan Specification requirements.
  • Manage deviation process to ensure compliance for out of specification ingredients, spot buys, and non-conformances.
  • Reports monthly supplier scorecard metrics for internal and external partners to drive continuous improvement with suppliers.
  • Builds relationships and educates internal/external business partners to drive program compliance.
  • Support internal FSQS improvement projects.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum BS degree in food science/technology or other closely related fields. Higher degree is preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in quality and food safety within the food industry with at least 5 years in vendor management. Packaged food industry preferred.
  • Specialized technical knowledge in Food Processing, Microbiology, Food Chemistry, Food Packaging, and/or Statistical analysis is strongly preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of ingredient food supplier verification process and experienced with supplier management system.
  • Ability in auditing vendor beyond the food safety but also including ingredient quality and claim attributes (such as Organic, GMO free, Food fraud, Quality Process Control).
  • Ability in identifying and researching into ingredient quality and claim attributes, and provide the decision for internal reference.
  • Familiar with HACCP, GFSI systems and FDA/FSMA regulations.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize multiple priorities and strong attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively and work across other function areas.
  • Possess strong desire for continuous improvements and is a self-starter.
  • Possess can do attitude and passion about delivering tangible results.

  • Strong math skills and the ability to develop and implement an SPC program preferred.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access and SharePoint).
  • Travel required.
