Simply Good Foods Company – Director of Research & Development

The Director of Research & Development is responsible for overall R&D department and laboratory facility management, product development launch programs, and scale up process. Ideally, candidates will have a combination of experiences, most likely working in a small to mid-sized, fast growing, entrepreneurial company. Experience formulating, in the plant, and process engineering are included.

The role is responsible for the management of the technology and new products pipeline in conjunction with the marketing and sales organizations, as well as the development and management of new products and product reformulations from bench to production scale. The role also supports Operations in the identification, qualification and execution of alternative ingredients while maintaining or exceeding finished product quality and meeting cost targets. Oversees label development, product specifications and co-pack manual development along with technical reference materials. Leads and develops the R&D team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and develop new food and manufacturing technologies that will advance new and existing products, help define and maintain a 3+ years’ technology pipeline that feeds into the product development pipeline
  • Define new products pipeline for launches in the next 3 business years
  • Improve product performance and expectations by working with manufacturing partners to scale up and launch products with robust, repeatable practice; train others in this area
  • Work with all departments, and external agencies and co-manufacturers, to accurately define technology, new product, and reformulation projects in terms of expected resource needs, timelines and budgets / product costs
  • Manage annual R&D budget
  • Develop and manage the execution of new products and product reformulations from bench to production scale, maintaining product cost and design targets
  • Responsible for evaluation of new technology (new ingredients, product forms) and new co-packers and other market products to ensure company products meet or exceed functional specifications and consumer expectations
  • Identify and assess co-manufacturers for capabilities to provide current and future products and technologies
  • Work on cross-functional project teams with co-manufacturers, ingredient suppliers, external development resources and internal functions such as Marketing, Sales, Operations, Finance and Quality
  • Develop ingredients and processing specifications and supports Quality Assurance to ensure products are run according to determined specifications for finished product compliance
  • Support management and review of nutritional labels, sensory evaluation data, costing and validation on commercial scale
  • Provide leadership to others and manage employees by establishing goals and objectives required to complete projects, meet corporate goals, business strategies and personal growth initiatives; train and mentor employees by building them up to become experts in specific subject areas
  • Provide support to international team; advise on new product development, production transfers, shelf-life testing, documentation and technical support. Share critical advances and Intellectual Property
  • Develop organizational capability (people, expertise and facility)
  • Manage overall spending and participate heavily in the development of the overall R&D budget
  • Participate in all other miscellaneous SMPL and departmental tasks, as required
  • Attend departmental / cross-functional meetings
  • Travel Requirements: 25-40%

The compensation available for this role includes base salary, as well as, an annual short-term bonus and a long-term incentive award. All incentive plans are subject to management and Board of Directors discretion.

The projected annual base salary range for this role is $160,000 to $180,000

The annual short-term incentive target for this role is 25% of your annual base salary

The annual long-term incentive target for this role is 20% of your base salary

Technical Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college in Engineering, Food Science, Chemistry or related fields, required; advanced degree, preferred
  • Minimum 10 years focused experience in executing innovation, technology and new products, from formulas building stage to commercialization with successful history of execution from concept to production
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in CPG
  • Minimum of 5 years in a supervisory capacity
  • In-depth experience in one, and preferably, multiple core categories of nutrition bars, shakes, or sweet and savory snacks
  • Hands on experience in manufacturing for yield analysis, trouble shooting, and optimization of products
  • Extensive experience and proven track record in innovating, managing and commercializing significant innovation projects in a cross-functional environment.

Skills / Knowledge:

  • Product knowledge of nutrition bars, shakes, candies, sweet and savory snacks
  • Knowledge of ingredient functionality and product formulations, of methods and techniques used to transform raw ingredients into food, of process science and how formula must be amended to fit specific co-packers
  • Knowledge on nutrition science and how to formulate products for defined functional requirements and consumer benefits, such as requirements on macronutrient composition, satiety, calories and micronutrients; as well as appearance, scent and taste
  • Proven track record in working cross-functionally to establish innovation, technology and new product pipelines that lead to sustainable and profitable growth
  • Outstanding computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment
  • Excellent time management skills, ability to prioritize multiple tasks, exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to acquire and adapt new technologies and turn into commercially successful product launches
  • Effectively manage multiple projects / tasks of varying complexities and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to successfully lead teams and demonstrate leadership abilities
  • Ability to operate chemical and analytical tools and laboratory equipment
  • Good communicator, successfully working “across the aisle”
  • Exemplary writing, listening, communication and presentation skills
  • Self-motivated with a desire to make an impact
