Sensory and Risk Evaluation Manager

The Sensory and Risk Evaluation Manager will be responsible for the following:

  • Leading a team of sensory professionals focused on collecting robust data to protect our product’s sensory profiles, support production, and guarantee product meets internal high-quality standards
  • This position will manage the sensory platform across different production location(s) including contract locations
  • The role will also include driving the sensory risk management team to a higher level of sensory excellence sensory through training and identification of best testing methods while maintaining and building an excellent external panelist base
  • Working closely with both sensory and plant leadership, provide expertise, feedback, and implementation in the following areas of Sensory Risk Management regarding but not limited to:
    • Loss and hazard mitigation of sensory testing and control panels
    • Proactive training of team in consumer risk management
    • Understanding procurement and vendor risk management as related to sensory testing on new products
    • Any compliance and safety risks associated with consumer testing
  • This position will focus on gaining the highest quality data to protect the sensory profiles of the high-quality products on the market as we develop more efficient ways to create them
  • This role will support current sensory professionals by coaching and mentoring them to uphold an excellent sensory standard. A key cornerstone of this role is creating an environment that encourages room for open communication and a team environment. The role will also work cross functionally including the customer, which includes but not limited to quality assurance and supply chain
  • Key skills include an advanced knowledge in sensory evaluation, knowledge in statistics, the ability to make decisions, strong problem-solving skills, excellent interpersonal skills, mathematical, verbal and written communication skills
  • This role will support current sensory professionals by coaching and mentoring them to uphold an excellent sensory standard. A key cornerstone of this role is creating an environment that encourages room for open communication and new research methods in order to learn the most from the information we gain
  • A keen eye to find and remove roadblocks that are preventing scientific excellence is vital to this role. The Sensory and Risk Manager will be expected to understand projects across team to make sure there is consistency and information sharing
  • This position will create a standard of what success looks like for the team and can communicate what is needed to meet these standards
  • Key skills include an advanced knowledge in Sensory evaluation, team building skills, applicable knowledge in statistics, the ability to make decisions, strong problem-solving skills, excellent interpersonal skills, mathematical, verbal and written communication skills

Technical Qualifications:

Building Programs

  • Build sensory panel and sensory training programs for not only the external sensory panel but also contract locations
  • Promote the proper use of statistics to support production centered initiatives, including interpreting data and providing high quality reports
  • Proactively develop systems, methods and tools to improve product and panelist evaluations. Provide trainings on tools when needed
  • Work cross-functionally with quality assurance and contract locations to assess for the highest quality in sensory profiles
  • Maintain a high focus on panelist training and panel maintenance to accommodate business needs
  • Provide ongoing management of SOPs for incoming ingredients and release to process

Quality Support

  • Use Sensory methods to guide quality decisions by utilizing the best possible methods to connect the product to the consumer
  • Create and maintain reporting procedures for communicating sensory results
  • Evaluate the performance of products – including weekly and monthly reporting of production evaluations – across all facilities
  • Audit the Sensory for Production program at all contract locations for opportunities for improvement

Successful Team Management

  • Establish team-wide excellent communication protocols, including ability to write concise and informative reports. Conduct trainings and hold team to high standards
  • Promote Sensory research and technical prowess in industry by making presentations on sensory evaluation to professional organizations and/or continuing education programs / seminars, staying current with literature and information about sensory evaluation, and pushing group to investigate and improve technical knowledge
  • Must develop and coach Sensory team members and develop strong interaction within sensory team across locations

Experience

  • BS/MS Degree in Sensory Science, Food Science, Statistics, or another related field
  • 7-10 years or more of experience in sensory
  • Minimum 2-4 years of proven leadership and management skills
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis
  • Experience coaching and mentoring others
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven success multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
  • High degree of ownership and professional commitment
  • Panel training experience
  • Experience conducting consumer testing
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis (xlstat a plus)
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required
  • Report writing and good communication skills are required
  • Proven success multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
  • High degree of ownership and professional commitment
  • Working knowledge of CompuSense, Red Jade, SIMS or other sensory software
  • Ability to listen to people
  • Influence others with research and documentation to back it up
  • Can talk the talk both in a technical capacity as well as to those in non-technical audience
  • Have patience to analyze sensory results with accurate methods and interpret accordingly
  • You have the ability to create and manage trained panels, and manage tests
  • Good personality to lead and guide iterations and be a part of building market-winning products
  • You like to see projects through the finish line and appreciate that sense of completion
  • Think outside the box to identify methods to answer research questions, and designing, organizing and working with cross-functional team members
  • Self-assured in your accuracy and guidance to R&D project leaders to keep product launches on target
  • Lend your hand to sensory continuous improvement techniques to help improve sensory transitions to new products
