Food Science at Rutgers University is a multidisciplinary enterprise consisting of The Department of Food Science, The Center for Advanced Food Technology, The Nutraceuticals Institute and The Food Industries Research and Extension Center. We work together to promote health, prevent disease, provide high quality foods to the consumer and contribute to economic development in New Jersey.
Rutgers Food Science offers the full range of academic degrees including the Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Master of Science (M.S.), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). On both the undergraduate and graduate level, the department emphasizes an understanding of basic science and its application to understand the structure, transformations, stability, and quality of foods. Specialization is possible at both the undergraduate and graduate level, allowing students to modify their course of study to meet their personal needs and interests. Internships or research experience is required at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, giving students real-world experience to supplement their formal coursework.
Perhaps most importantly, the long standing relationship between the department and the local food industry ensures that graduates at all levels are assured of a wide range of challenging professional opportunities as food industry professionals.
