Research Scientist

The Research Scientist will have the following responsibilities:

  • The Research Scientist’s primary responsibility will be to develop and lead a program of natural products science with the goal to develop novel food and beverage ingredients and innovative processing solutions
  • The scope of this role includes a broad spectrum of botanical/horticultural raw materials, with an emphasis on vanilla, coffee and tea
  • The work with directly support a key strategic growth area around sustainable natural ingredients and will be accomplished by collaborating with members of the analytical, sensory, applications and flavor creation teams as well as international colleagues
  • The Research Scientist will be required to identify and engage with external research organizations and academic institutions who can add value to internal projects. The role requires an in-depth knowledge of the food science and flavor chemistry components of horticultural science

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Key Requirements:

  • Lead internal botanical/horticultural science research program as well as external research collaborations
  • Perform benchtop research in areas such as distillation, extraction, filtration and concentration of natural products and raw materials
  • Provide technical leadership for troubleshooting the scale-up or production of novel natural ingredients
  • Maintain very close working relationship with staff at facility through routine communication and regular visit (5-10 per/year)
  • Work closely with cross functional team (analytical chemistry, sensory, application & flavor creation) to achieve desired results
  • Lead work ranging from fundamental research through to food and beverage prototyping. Prepare research reports and present analysis of results
  • Keep abreast of scientific advances in the areas of analytical chemistry, food science and flavor chemistry and disseminate throughout organization
  • Lead multiple projects independently in terms of planning, analysis and communication


  • BS, MS, PhD in Food Science, Food Engineering or similar disciplines
  • 3-5+ years of experience in the Food/Flavor industry with practical application of scientific methods
  • Knowledge in vanilla, coffee’s and teas desirable
  • Analytical techniques with gas and liquid chromatography, analyzing data and creating trial reports
  • Executing experimental work and disseminating findings
  • Good organization
  • Technical troubleshooting
  • Innovation in flavors and ingredients research
  • Great communicator, and likes to work in a team environment
  • Likes to be an ambassador/advocate of the company and represent with pride at tradeshows, with customers and community
  • Enthusiasm to drive research and results in the company
