R&D Technologist / R&D Senior Scientist Lead

The purpose of the position is to be a key addition on the R&D new project teams, creating innovative products and helping to improve on existing ones. Always pushing to optimize flavor and nutritional value for pet food.

Job Description:

The functions performed by this position are in R&D project leadership and execution by designing and conducting benchtop experiments, running pilot samples, line batch trials and final commercialization of products.

  • Benchtop formulation and re-formulation work
  • Calculate formulas, create sample batches using lab equipment
  • Conduct plant trials
  • Lead ‘cuttings’ with technical information on hand
  • Cross-functional work with sales, marketing, operations, and quality
  • Work independently on projects and ability to take ownership of your work
  • Computer skills, documentation skills, record formulas, evaluate analysis
  • Conduct presentations to team members including corporate business team via oral and written reporting
  • Prepare and conduct meeting updates, product cuttings, presentations, shelf life testing and cost analysis to project team members
  • Adaptability and quick turn-around when required
  • Multi-task ability on projects and daily lab work, likes fast-paced environment going from lab, to plant, running trials, documentation and sharing results weekly
  • Likes project leadership and management, owning results and having an entrepreneurial spirit in creating new products
  • Team attitude, helping where needed and providing input that creates value amongst peers
  • Passion about animal health and understanding how you contribute to their well-being
  • Manage multiple projects and show technical competence in the planning and completion of assigned projects leading to the development and implementation into production of new or revised products without supervision
  • Records, collates, evaluates, and interprets experimental data and makes appropriate recommendations to all levels in the organization through written or oral reports
  • Maintains an accurate laboratory notebook of all intellectual property


  • BS/MS Food Science, Animal Science or equivalent required
  • Minimum 2-5 years of experience in pet food OR meat protein industry is required
  • Strong technical knowledge in meat and poultry science, meat microbiology, cereal chemistry, and pet food product development
  • General laboratory and formulation experience is required
  • Prior R&D project management experience is required
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Set up and operate standard lab equipment / techniques of moderate complexity
  • Conduct innovation work sessions and develop new products in lab
  • Facilitate lab, pilot plant or plant test runs
  • When appropriate, supervises technicians, plant personnel and/or interns in the execution of experiments, plant test runs and product commissioning
  • Independently carry out assignments and review data for accuracy and trends and communicate any concerns
  • Effectively interact with cross-function project teams internal and external through written and oral communications and maintain current understanding of overall project status
  • Collaborate with colleagues to make significant individual contribution to deliver goals and execute project plans
