Quality Engineer
Quality ingredient and packaging suppliers, manage company-wide supplier corrective action request process (SCAR), qualify Co-manufacturers, and lead continuous improvement projects as needed throughout the supply chain.
Essential Function and Responsibilities:
Work with ingredient and packaging suppliers, co-manufacturers, 3rd party warehouses, and co-packers to:
- Qualify new facilities and/or new materials to include on-site auditing as necessary
- On-site auditing of facilities
- Identify root cause, and corrective action processes to address non-conformances, driving the SCAR program
- Drive continuous improvement
- Tracking and monitoring of performance through development of key metrics/scorecards
- Build collaborative relationships to drive reliable performance and value for company
- Conduct internal (company facility) qualifications (pilot runs) of new or revised ingredient and packaging supplies interfacing with the supplier, R&D, Purchasing, and Manufacturing as necessary to properly evaluate suitability
- Work in partnership with company Process Engineer to build improved Manufacturing and Packaging processes that enable quality system improvement
- Implement and champion a Quality Control Point system using HACCP and Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA) principles in company facilities
- Perform other functions as assigned by the supervisor. For example: Train personnel in problem solving, troubleshooting, statistical and team building methods
- Conduct internal audits of internal operations to assess effectiveness and compliance to company and FDA expectations
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Education/Experience: B.S. in science or engineering; 5 or more years in Quality role in the consumer products industry
- Auditing: Experience performing on-site audits of suppliers and/or contract manufacturers required
- Travel: Job requires up to 20-25% travel with potential for international travel as the company grows
- Quality Engineering: Knowledge of continuous improvement tools such as statistics, Lean methods, Six Sigma concepts, and other Quality Engineering methods. Certification in techniques preferred (e.g., ASQ certified)
- Leadership – Ability to lead and influence others internally and externally to achieve quality goals
- Consumer Products: Working knowledge of GMPs in FDA regulated consumer products, HACCP systems, and plant operations
- Communication: Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Demonstrated skills presenting to small groups and responding effectively to questions. Well skilled in writing reports to convey information and persuade others
- Problem Solving: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- People Development: Takes opportunities to develop individual competencies to ensure skills are aligned with evolving roles in the organization
- Open, curious and willing to learn new skills. Owns individual development
