Description:
Glasgow Consulting Group has an opening on our Product Development team. We are able to consider Senior Scientist or Principal Scientist levels, based on candidate's education and experience. The position is based in Narragansett, RI.

We look for scientists who are hands on, that can prioritize their time and successfully manage multiple projects.

Position Summary:  Plan, design/develop, and commercialize new product formulas. Provide comprehensive technical leadership to projects from concept through commercialization. Provide technical updates frequently through various forms of communication, verbal or written. Support other development projects and related activities as needed.

Principal Responsibilities and areas of Accountability:

  • Plan, design/develop, and commercialize new product formulas that meet all project criteria such as cost, nutritional requirements, desired claims (like Gluten Free, GMO Free, Organic, etc.), and food safety/quality parameters.
  • Create bench top formulas that translate seamlessly to pilot or full-scale production.
  • Provide thorough and accurate technical documentation for all work.
  • Source new ingredients that meet project requirements.
  • Cost ingredients and formulas to ensure target cost requirements are met.
  • Calculate nutrition facts panel and ingredient statements.
  • Identify suitable co-packers as needed.
  • Focus on critical details without losing site of the total project objectives.
  • Manage multiple projects, often with competing timelines, while continuing to prioritize time to ensure all work meets the project timelines.
  • Apply critical thinking and sound technical judgement to assess the ingredient, formulation, or processing changes needed to obtain success.
  • Travel as needed to scale up formulas at the manufacturing plant. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve production complications in a food safe/quality focused and fiscally responsible manner during scale up.
  • Demonstrates coachability with willingness and openness to learn.
  • Continuous improvement mindset.

 

Qualifications:

  • Requires an M.S. or PhD in Food Science or equivalent, plus 10+ years of product development experience in the food and beverage industry. 
  • Broad understanding of the fundamentals of Food Science with the ability to remain up to date on new and emerging technologies and apply to product development projects.
  • Advanced PC skills: Windows, Excel, ESHA/Genesis
  • Proven track record of successful product launches. 
  • Advanced communication skills.
