The Microbiologist is responsible for executing, analyzing and interpreting data for all in-house microbiological testing required for QC release of incoming ingredients and finished products. In addition, this position maintains the Environmental Monitoring Program.


  • Perform or review in-house microbiological testing of raw ingredients and finished products required for QC release
  • Document test results and perform out of spec investigations when applicable
  • Maintain the Environmental Monitoring Program for the Sebastopol plant
  • Complete projects related to process improvements/FDA compliance
  • Maintain QC documents specific to microbiology lab
  • Develop and maintain quality control procedures specific to the micro lab
  • Validate and maintain new instruments/processes
  • Maintain inventory of microbiology lab supplies
  • Consult for other departments regarding microbiological or general cleaning issues
  • Oversee training of new personnel
  • Evaluate new testing methodologies

  • Assist in other areas of the lab as needed

  • BA or BS in microbiology, biology, chemistry or related field
  • Three years’ experience working in a regulated microbiology lab
  • Two years QC experience in food, dietary supplement, or other regulated industry
  • Experience working with an environmental monitoring program preferred


  • Familiarity with 21 CFR Part 111 for Dietary Supplements preferred
  • Strong knowledge of GMPs is required
  • Advanced microbiology skills - aseptic sampling, autoclaving, serial dilutions, colony forming unit counts
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory protocols and equipment –analytical weighing, volumetric glassware, sterile handling, chemical safety
  • Able to collaborate, influence and work effectively across multiple departments
  • Ability to read and interpret regulatory documents
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Excellent organization and detail skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred

Technical Skills:

  • Intermediate MS Suite

Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional travel to Rohnert Park site

Work Environment:

  • Works primarily in the QC laboratory with hazardous chemicals present, requiring competence and familiarity with safe handling and storage of acids, bases and solvents
  • May work in the warehouse, must follow GMP requirements and safety precautions for each area
