General Responsibilities/Job Summary

Manage all aspects of Culver Duck Farms, Inc. Live Haul Operations. The position manages “loading and delivery” of live ducks to the Middlebury Facility. The Live haul Manager will be responsible for scheduling and directing a team of drivers, helpers, and vehicle maintenance to ensure that live ducks are loaded humanely, efficiently, safely and delivered on time, in excellent condition and by following all applicable laws/regulations and company policies. The position will also be responsible for animal welfare programs, safety, and associated compliance within the live haul operations. The team will be responsible for loading in a multitude of geographical locations within 75 miles of the Middlebury facility and weather conditions typical to Northern Indiana.


Internally: Director of Live Operations, Live Haul Drivers, Live Haul Helpers, Yard Drivers, Producers, Truck Shop, Flock Supervisors, Home Farm, Processing Plant Management and Live Unloading Personnel, Safety, Human Resources, Animal Welfare, Customer Service, Processing Plant Warehouse Personnel and Sales.

Externally: Outside Leasing Companies, Outside Equipment Vendor and Maintenance Vendor Companies, Various Regulatory Companies, DOT, Clients, Contract Breeders and Growers.

DECISION MAKING RESPONSIBILITIES: Manage all aspects of the duck live haul operation and some finished products.

  • Maintaining the lowest possible hauling costs with the highest possible quality and safety
  • Animal welfare implementation, verification, and investigation.

  • Protecting company assets
  • Maintaining good employee relations.
  • Schedule equipment and work force to ensure processing facility has scheduled birds.
  • Must have approval of higher authority for additions to staff, terminations of exempt employees, and for change of policies or procedures or equipment replacement.

Essential Functions/Duties:

Manage the pickup and transportation of ducks, which includes but is not limited to:

  • Scheduling the daily pickups
  • Routing of Trucks/Trailers
  • Bio-Security: Assuring that personnel use Best Practices and all equipment is cleaned.
  • Maintain records to ensure traceability and audit preparedness.
  • Coordinating shipping schedules with live production and processing plant.
  • Correcting problems between Live haul, contract producers and other departments.
  • Manage costs, production levels, physical assets, and Team Members in a manner to meet budgeted cost.
  • Oversee repair costs for Truck Shop
  • Eliminate equipment that is unnecessary in meeting our objectives.
  • Maintain building, grounds, and equipment to be always in top condition, safety, and appearance.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and company policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Employee Relations:

  • Develop and train hourly and exempt employees to prepare them to achieve the company objectives.
  • Recruit, hire, discipline and terminate exempt (with approval) and non-exempt personnel as appropriate.
  • Work with Safety Manager to develop and implement Safety Programs to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Work with Animal Welfare Manager to ensure proper training of department and to ensure policies are being followed and investigations are being completed when necessary.
  • Ensure that all records and reports are timely and accurate.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a minimum of five years of managerial or supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of poultry transportation is highly preferred.
  • Must have excellent written/verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to manage a budget.
  • B.A./B.S. preferred or equivalent work experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOT Law.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Must have valid driver’s (CDL) license and clean driving record.

Physical and Mental Job Requirements

  • Must be able to work days, and nights (when necessary) and be available for calls 24/7.
  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to make decisions while under pressure.

Working Conditions

  • Expectation to be available to work in all weather conditions.
  • Will work on trucks and trailers. Includes climbing ladders.
  • Expected to be at farms of producers.
