Innovation Principal Scientist

This is a key role on the team that will be technically sound in beverage bases and nutritional blends, and customer-facing with travel to customer sites.  Ability to translate to layman’s terms and present information, in addition to speaking with technical audience for research, development, and processing know-how.

Key skillsets used in this role:

  • Recognized internally as subject matter expert in defined ingredient solutions products and end use categories
  • Provide technical support to customers and internal teams for ingredient solutions and applications.  Manage development of products for assigned projects
  • Communicate ingredients’ technical value to external and internal customers
  • Support sales and customers as technical resource

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Develop new products for assigned opportunities, including new product development focusing on powder blending for seasonings, beverage bases, and nutritional blends
  • Develop, make and evaluate finished applications to support new product development
  • Track and report progress on projects Salesforce, PCM, and other areas as required
  • Coordinate and execute new product scale-ups at manufacturing facilities
  • Participate as technical liaison on cross functional teams to support the company Ingredient Solutions growth
  • Work closely with Sales / Marketing and cross-functional teams on commercializing innovation ingredients, and effectively communicating about customer projects in pipeline and other meeting venues
  • Travel to support projects with customers and scale up at plants
  • Safely operate lab and pilot plant equipment related to spray drying, dry blending, enzyme modification, fermentation, natural flavors, advanced nutrition, and other areas as assigned
  • Follow all company good manufacturing practices (GMP) and work in a manner consistent with all corporate regulatory, food safety, quality, and sanitation requirements
  • Respond with data and facts when called upon to be technical resource to customer, sales, customer service, QA, operations, supply chain, and other functional departments
  • Champion ideas, share information, develop and lead creative solutions, develop custom formulations, design ingredients for customers’ systems, successfully manage projects without supervision, develop and create applications, and be recognized as a technical liaison
  • Utilize and maintain proficiency in software systems, including but not limited to, formulation (PLM), production (ERP), sales (CRM)

Technical Qualifications:

  • 8-10+ years of experience working in R&D, product development, or innovation at food or ingredient company preferred
  • Experience in successfully commercializing products, and being a technical liaison
  • Expert knowledge in area of Food Science, Dairy Chemistry, Fermentation Science, Enzyme Modified Products, and/or Flavor Creation
  • Proficient in experimental design
  • Skills in orderly and effective problem solving
  • Skills in organization and attention to details
  • Knowledge of Laboratory, Pilot Plant, and manufacturing facility processes and procedures
  • Aptitude for equipment operation, maintenance, and sanitation
  • Able to generate ideas, test their effectiveness and decide on a plan of action
  • Able to demonstrate professional, verbal, and written communication
  • Able to follow written and oral instruction and able to lead through written and oral methods
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Able to communicate with various departments including Customers, Sales, Customer Service, Marketing, Quality Assurance, Operations and Product Development in a professional manner
  • Skills as a collaborative team player
