Health & Safety Coordinator – Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Position Overview

The Health & Safety Coordinator works closely with the Pedricktown Processing Facility and the Toronto Health & Safety Supervisor to ensure that health and safety standards and procedures are met and aligned with internal guidelines and policies. Actively advise, guide and support the Pedricktown Processing Facility to implement internal Health and Safety measures and comply with Occupation Safety and Health Act (OSHA) regulations. Reporting to the Health & Safety Supervisor, the Health & Safety Coordinator modifies, maintains and communicates the existing Health and Safety Program to all parties. Up to 70% of the role is performed on the production floor actively coaching employees, supervisors and contractors towards a more safety conscious mindset by identifying and mitigating workplace hazards and performing Behavioral Based Observations that will focus on positive reinforcements and gaps in our SOPs. Act as a resource for Joint Health & Safety Committee members, managers, supervisors & production workers for all health & safety concerns. Reports any safety hazards and unsafe work practices and develops corrective action plans. Influences and emulates behavior towards a proactive rather than reactive safety culture.

Major Responsibilities

  1. Health and Safety Compliance: Is responsible for maintaining a thorough knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety to comply with appropriate regulations, governing bodies and internal health and safety programs with the aim to make the workplace as safe as possible. Point of contact for the US business for regulators, insurers, and external certification, ensuring ongoing compliance across the site at all times.
  2. Documentation: Creates, modifies, and maintains Health and Safety procedures and program documentation with traceability for version control, keeping workers and Management informed of the program, process, changes and new requirements. Manages all onsite contractor processes in accordance with requirements.
  3. Inspections: Performs all Health and Safety inspections on a regular basis, making recommendations for continuous improvement. Researches materials, equipment or supplies to remediate potential hazards in a proactive way. Reports anomalies immediately to site Management and Health & Safety Supervisor.
  4. Investigations: Investigates any incidents, accidents or near misses, documents root cause, recommends corrective action, and coaches workers and Management on safety first approach.
  5. Worker Compensation Case Management: Manages the Workers Compensation activities, relationship, documents, process, and return to work meetings with the aim of eliminating workplace injuries.
  6. Workplace Hazardous Materials: Partners with the Site Management to maintain up to date hazardous material awareness and training and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) compliance, under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS).
  7. Certifications: Ensures all certification, inspection, servicing requirements are maintained in accordance with current legislation, including fire certification and compliance, seeks quotations as required and makes recommendations to the site management team
  8. Internal Safety Program Audit: Implements and conducts regular internal audits and recommends improvements to comply with federal, state and local requirements
  9. Emergency Response: Creates and updates Fire Safety Plan, Emergency Response Plan, organizes and evaluates regular evacuation drills and recommends corrective action for improvements, maintains first aid action plan and communications.
  10. Risk Assessment: Evaluates existing Risk Assessment and Control Matrix, makes recommendations for improvements and communicates to all parties.
  11. Ergonomics: Understands ergonomics and can assess risks, recommend alternative work methods, liaise with external parties to implement equipment or revised processes that eliminate or reduce bodily strain and injuries.
  12. Reporting: Regularly reports health and safety stats for inclusion in Period End Reports.
  13. Training: Creates and conducts regular Safety Talks, new hire and contractor safety awareness training and sign off, and tracks and records all training in database/Alchemy Training System. Recommends and registers external safety training courses for key personnel and tracks completion and renewal dates. Provides support for programs such as LOTO, Hazard Communication, Emergency Response, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, etc.
  14. Customer Service: Provides support that is friendly, valued, knowledgeable, and timely. Models behaviors that support the Health and Safety policy.
  15. Joint Health and Safety Committee: Participates as an active certified member of the JHSC with a leadership role to co-chair the meetings, take, post and distribute the minutes, and educate and coach the committee members to understand and fulfill their responsibilities.
  16. Other Duties: Performs other related duties as assigned, and initiates recommendations to further enhance the company’s recognition as a top employer.
  17. Contractor Qualifications: Maintains and ensures all contractors and sub-contractors coming onsite are fully licensed and understand The Lamb Company Health & Safety policies. Completes Pre-Job Hazard Assessment forms.

Key Success Measures

  • There are zero non-compliance Health and Safety issues in the Pedricktown facility
  • New hires, temporary workers and contractors receive Health and Safety training to perform their duties
  • All Health and Safety training programs are updated and training records are maintained
  • All OSHA documentation is complete, accurate and up to date

Qualifications & Considerations for the Position

  • Post-secondary education (Degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene) is preferred
  • Minimum 3 years work experience in a Health & Safety role within the food (meat) processing industry
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, previous experience with onsite audits, documentation, and follow up
  • Practical hands on experience with LOTO, Machine Guarding, Ergonomics, Risk Assessment and Incident Analysis
  • Fluency in English required, Spanish an asset
  • Joint Health and Safety Committee Certification
  • Current CPR and First Aid training
  • Must be able to work independently and collaboratively, with strong ability to influence others
  • Organized self-starter with proven ability to manage and effectively follow up on multiple projects and assignments and meet all deadlines
  • Excellent observational skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Able to collect, maintain, evaluate data, summarize and write reports, and recommend continuous improvement
  • Good oral, written and communication skills; able to develop and maintain strong working relationships with production and office staff and external Auditors
  • Proficient in computer software, such as email
  • Strong teaching, coaching, mentoring skills, willingness to train others
  • Familiarity with Alchemy Training Systems
  • Embodies a mindset of continuous improvement; experience in the practical application of Lean, Six Sigma and operational excellence methodologies would be an asset
  • Team focused, with integrity and a can do attitude
  • Ability to work in temperature controlled environment
