Job Description

The Raw Materials Purchasing Buyer I will be responsible for sourcing, negotiating and purchasing of raw materials. Areas of focus will include market analysis, inventory management, customer and supplier relationship management, innovation, cost management, and continuous improvement. This position will work closely with Suppliers, Country Elevator Operations and Keokuk Operations to ensure reliable cost-effective supply of materials.

Purchase grain (corn) and oversee/control inventory:

  • Develop and implement short and long term tactics to purchase cash corn and/or basis levels at or below the market and profit plan.

  • Negotiate contracts with providers for the best interest of RAI

  • Ensure grain contracts are current and legally binding.

  • Develop and sustain long-term customer, supplier/vendor (brokers, grain elevators, logistics providers) relations to ensure service and reliability.

  • Ensure continuous and uninterrupted corn raw material supply at optimum cost, and within the policies and guidelines established by management, keeping management and Operations informed of available inventory and potential issues.

  • Develop and recommend improvements on the grain procurement process to promote efficiency and cost savings.

Grain market analysis:

  • Maintain up to date grain market analysis by assessing and analyzing market data and trends; network with industry experts, customers and numerous suppliers.

  • Daily monitoring of CME futures price activity and that of local grain competitors.

  • Uses supply and demand tools to analyze short/mid/long-term price direction in highly volatile market.

  • Analyzes local transient supply and demand elements to determine better-case purchase timing and basic tactics, making RAI inventory holding quantity decisions.

Price Setting:

  • Position has freedom to act on setting daily corn bases bids and basis purchases, selecting corn suppliers and logistics (barge, truck and/or rail),

Backup of other Team Member Functions:

  • Must be able to learn, understand and cover other team members' responsibilities.

  • Due to the daily requirements of the business, covering part of other responsibilities is necessary.

  • This will primarily include the those of grain payables include daily ticket application, settlements, broker reconciliations, etc.

Other Items:

  • Coordinates with Roquette America toll customers to fulfill their potential hedging needs as well as provide them with necessary market information.

  • Change/enhance work processes, reporting to streamline, create efficiencies provide leveraged information, and make recommendations.

  • Other projects and items as necessary

Functional Competencies:

  • Demonstrated high degree of integrity, trust and reliability; ability to develop and sustain professional internal and external working relationships consistent with RAI values

  • Positive, effective and persuasive communication and coordination skills to build mutually beneficial working relationships.

  • Strong analytical/ problem solving skills to make fact based decisions with a proactive approach to providing solutions and generating ideas

  • Demonstrated ability to creatively resolve moderately complex problems.

  • Proficient in sourcing, negotiation, pricing and also in supplier performance management

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficient in Microsoft Office/Outlook

Technical Applicative Competencies:

  • Developed knowledge of U.S. grain markets.

  • Macroeconomic supply and demand.

  • Moderate knowledge of grain storage, milling and commodity customer needs.

  • Proficient customer and vendor relations, including contract negotiations.



  • BS/BA in applicable fields such as Agriculture Economics, Business Administration, Accounting, Finance.


  • 3-5 years of corn/grain purchasing, merchandising, hedging and grain procurement. 3-5 years of negotiation.

Specific requirements:

  • Valid driver's license

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This is a full-time position. Days and standard hours of work are Monday through Friday, Works of RAI holidays when the CBOT is open.

Business Trips (Percentage):

  • Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
