Food Technologist

The R&D responsibilities of the Food Technologist will include:

  • Product development experience within a food manufacturing environment, for confectionary and syrup/sauce, liquid / wet mix / ice cream confections required
  • Formulation for whipped toppings, confectionary centers, beverage syrups, layering caramels, sweet icings fortified with protein, low sugar, clean-label, non-GMO ingredients
  • Detailed understanding of ingredient functionality including stabilizer, protein, and fat interactions
  • Ability to self-manage projects including excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with all levels of the company
  • Adaptability, creativity, and teamwork
  • MS Office proficiency
  • Ability to define problems, collect and interpret data, draw valid conclusions, and propose solutions
  • Must be able to translate product feedback into optimized solutions
  • Support Senior Food Technologists as needed for development of long-term / complex projects, pilot and plant trials as assigned
  • Support Sales initiatives to drive revenue.  Formulate and prepare benchtop / pilot samples per customers’ project briefs, specified restrictions, and within time allotments
  • Develop predictive analytical testing methods to ensure successful new product transitions to manufacturing
  • Lead new product trials with support from Quality, Engineering, and Operations
  • Leverage problem solving and critical thinking skills to overcome development obstacles, find solutions, and resolve issues with commercialization
  • Perform physical and chemical testing of customer prototypes including, moisture, water activity, pH, viscosity, and microscopy
  • Develop specifications for prototype samples
  • Conduct storage studies to validate new product shelf life
  • Maintain internal documentation and records per internal requirements
  • Source new ingredients / flavors / etc. as needed.  Evaluate performance, record results, and approve raw material documentation
  • Assist in productivity driven projects

Technical Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Masters, preferably in Food Science
  • 1-3 years related experience, someone from beverages, liquids ideal
  • Conduct pre-trial plant meetings and plant trials with support from Senior Food Technologist and R&D Manager
  • Work closely with Sales & Senior Food Technologists in order to meet customer expectations while assuring all project requirements including costing and ingredient restrictions
  • Initiate corrective actions by reporting any food safety or quality problems / issues to supervisor or designee
  • Support Quality Assurance when quality issues arise with products with support from Senior Food Technologists and R&D Manager
  • Work directly with customers on projects with support from Senior Food Technologists and R&D Manager
  • Ensures that client specifications are followed through all production stages for all new product scale up with support from Senior Food Technologists and R&D Manager
  • Collaborate with Purchasing to request flavor and ingredient samples from suppliers as needed
  • Interface with supplier’s applications personnel with Senior Food Technologists and R&D Manager as required
  • Travel as needed to support sales visits and support trade shows
