PURPOSE: 

To ensure that the company’s farming food safety programs are compliant with all relevant auditing requirements including the Food Safety Modernization Act, Primus GFS, Commodity specific standards such as LGMA, National Organic Program, CCOF and to review Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) programs along with customer specific standards for farming operations. In addition, assist in the training of personnel to ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory standards.

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:      

  • BA/BS in Agriculture, Biology, Food Science, Food Safety or related work experience in these fields preferred
  • Knowledge and work experience with LMGA’s, GAP, National Organic Program and FSMA required
  • Must have prior experience creating, updating, and implementing food safety programs
  • Farming Food Safety Manager shall be self-directed and be able to complete tasks with minimal supervision; must be organized and detail oriented
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality about all aspects of job
  • Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required, along with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and Power Point
  • Employee may be required to work overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays if needed
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively including some evenings and weekend travel
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean DMV driving record
  • Must pass pre-placement drug/alcohol screen

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Farming Food safety manager is responsible for field implementation and compliance of all aspects of farming food safety and sampling programs under the guidance of Director and or VP, Food safety
  • Assist the Food Safety department in developing Food Safety, regulatory initiatives to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations as well as compliance with specific customer requirements.
  • Responsible for assisting Director of QA, Farming operations with implementation and overseeing a comprehensive food safety program for growing, harvesting, packing and transportation of fresh produce from farm to facility
  • Assist with implementation and overseeing comprehensive analytical sampling program of the soil, water and other Agricultural inputs used to grow fresh produce for internal use
  • Responsible for field implementation of a comprehensive sanitation validation program for harvest equipment following regulatory and customer requirements
  • Oversee and assist Field compliance supervisor and offer technical support to Traveling field food safety technicians in the routine field inspections for pre-season, pre-harvest and harvest crews
  • Verify and ensure that growers, harvesters and labor contractors maintain compliance with all applicable Food Safety and regulatory requirements. 
  • Responsible for maintaining full compliance with current audit schemes – Primus GFS, LGMA and future implementations of Global GAP audit scheme.
  • Assist with customer interaction and facilitating field visits when needed.
  • Responsible for reviewing, updating and helping maintain FSM programs documentation.
  • Ensure that all documentation is complete, accurate and properly recorded.
  • Conduct field food safety investigations, recommend and coordinate implementation of corrective actions
  • Oversee training of personnel to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory standards. 
  • Protect security and confidentiality of company information at all times.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with all applicable representatives of Grimmway Farms, growers, harvesters, suppliers, etc.
  • Perform other related tasks and job duties as directed by Director of Quality for Farming Operations.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work in wet and damp environment. Exposed to outdoor given climate. While, there is considerable office work, employee is expected to personally monitor and document many agricultural activities relating to growing and harvesting operations.  Employee will be required to drive locally between ranches, stand and walk in rough, uneven, sometimes muddy terrain seasonality may require overnight travel depending on growing areas.
