Director R&D Innovation

The R&D Director, Innovation will provide R&D technical strategic direction, organizational design, talent management in support of the overall business innovation strategy and long-range plans.  Accountabilities:

  • Leads development of technical strategic direction for the R&D organization that supports the overall business innovation strategy and long-range plans
  • Experience with stage-gate processes as it relates to Innovation
  • Collaborate with the VP of R&D, Sales and Marketing on Innovation activities to support the long-term strategy of the organization.  This includes promising areas of research or technology that address unmet customer needs and have large potential markets: breakthrough innovation
  • Collaborates with Sales & Marketing peers to establish business priorities for selection and execution of business opportunities
  • Ensures consistent application and integration of Consumer Insights, Culinary and Sensory into product development activities
  • Collaborate with external resources (ingredient and equipment vendors, universities, etc.), to work on innovative technologies
  • Applies scientific and engineering principles in research, development, production technology, quality control, packaging, processing, and utilization of foods
  • Work closely with Supply Chain and Quality to link R&D product and process formulation activities to commercial fulfillment efficiencies and production of safe and regulatory compliant food products
  • Develops and implements functional metrics and goals to monitor and report on opportunity progress and success, resource investment, and expenditures as an indicator of efficiencies and effectiveness
  • Drives development and implementation of R&D processes to improve efficiencies and effectiveness of function
  • Work with H& to develop and execute an R&D talent management program
  • Establishes goals, appraises job performance, recommends training and prepares final review for all direct reports.  Coaches staff on job performance and career planning
  • Provides regular reports and recommendations to the VP of R&D regarding progress of all key initiatives and products under development

Technical Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Chemistry or related technical degree
  • Minimum 15-20 years of Research & Product Development experience within the food industry
  • Experience should have included time with a retail or foodservice manufacturer and extensive experience in working directly with manufacturing facilities
  • Experience managing technical teams (5+ Scientists)
