Scope of Role

This position provides organizational leadership for new product development, existing portfolio support/maintenance, quality design and the synthesis of all aspects of product performance in delivering the consumer proposition. This role has direct responsibility for the management and development of the R&D / QA Departments. The successful candidate will actively participate in the manufacturing site’s leadership team and act as a positive cultural ambassador to all team members.

Principal Accountabilities

Regulatory, Formulation, and Quality Focus

  • Leads and owns product technical formulation in close partnership with Red’s culinary team, including development of key processes and documentation
  • Prepares and authors submissions for regulatory documentation
  • Monitors current U.S. regulatory environment and leads the implementation of necessary change to ensure ongoing compliance
  • Leverages IP management to deliver ownable product designs
  • Responsible for the development of nutritional fact panel information for RED’s® products
  • Controls raw material specifications for internal and external manufacturing compliance
  • Maintains all R&D systems and documentation, keeping current at all times (specifications, bill of materials, etc.)
  • Establishes measurable product Quality standards for all of RED’s® products
  • Leads, guides, and directs Red’s Quality team for food quality and safety audits, implementation of QA programs, adherence to QA policies, and compliance to all government and other regulatory organizations requirements
  • Collaborates with RED’s® supply chain team on manufacturing capital asset purchases
  • Partners with the manufacturing team to provide effective and efficient production line trials for new products and product changes
  • Collaborates with existing supply base to identify new technology and material opportunities
  • Develops and directs departmental staffing and training strategies to ensure technical competence, creativity, teamwork and broad business knowledge leading to continued managerial and technical leadership for R&D
  • Defines annual operating cost estimates for the R&D function and manages budget expense spending within agreed guidelines

Innovation Focus

  • Provides the organizational direction and framework for the new product innovation process at RED’s®
    (i.e., management of product concepts, documentation of product designs & process instructions, and regulatory compliance)
  • Provides functional expertise in innovation management to generate differentiated and relevant new product designs
  • Develops innovative product design solutions to support growth plans
  • Collaborates to ensure consumer relevance as well as operational and financial feasibility of innovation activities
  • Collaborates cross-functionally to prioritize shared resources that are needed to deliver accurate and timely product innovations
  • Partners with Supply Chain and Innovation teams to identify and qualify new suppliers and/or external manufacturers

Key Functional Skills/Knowledge

  • Strong technical competency within food science, health and nutrition, food manufacturing processes, quality assurance principles, ingredient supply market and market research practices
  • Food Science, Engineering, Chemistry or equivalent BS degree required
  • 6+ years of increasing leadership responsibility in product / process innovation
  • Progressive QA & R&D leadership experience in a Fast Moving Consumer Goods environment in the food/beverage industry
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver excellence in the execution of business activities
  • Demonstrated ability to shape, lead and manage multiple areas of development
  • Extensive knowledge of consumer-centric new product development
  • Highly creative technical development and/or problem-solving skills
  • Experience with food regulations and regulating bodies, including USDA and/or FDA
  • A history of successful new product introductions and continuous improvement implementations in previous roles, with an intellectual curiosity to find and develop opportunities
  • An established demonstrable network with R&D leaders / organizations in academia, government and/or trade / industry associations
  • Previous USDA Background or interaction preferred
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects/tasks concurrently with the ability to prioritize work
  • Demonstrated excellence in project and people management
  • Comfortable leading and working in a evolving company
  • Excellent influencing and communication skills
  • Willingness to travel up to 25%
