Deckhand in Unalaska AK

MUST HAVE PREVIOUS DECKHAND AND/OR COMBI EXPERIENCE WORKING ON FACTORY TRAWLER IN ALASKA.

Deckhands work aboard at-sea processing vessels in the Bering Sea, Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands. They perform all functions of Factory Trawler deck operations including gear work and safety under direct supervision of the Bosun or Master.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Signals workers such as Combis to move, hoist, or position nets and equipment safely as required to haul and set fishing gear and equipment
• Attaches slings, hooks, and other lifting devices to cables, trawl equipment and nets as required to safely haul, empty, repair and set fishing gear at sea in all weather conditions
• Operate cranes, winches or other lifting equipment to bring aboard and move equipment on deck as necessary
• Trains Combi personnel in safe and efficient deck operation procedures
• Operates skiff to transport crew, supplies or equipment at sea or in port
• Makes repairs and adjustments fishing gear and equipment to and other trawler deck equipment as needed
• Secures and removes vessels docking lines to and from docks and other vessels
• Participates as member of fire and safety team in emergency situation
• Works up to 4 hours/day in the factory, or more as needed

Physical Ability and Skills:

• Variable schedule, normally works 16 hours/day beginning and ending at any time of day or night
• Understand instructions and safety rules in English
• Board and exit vessel without assistance by climbing up and down a gangway or Jacob&##39;s ladder
• Capable of climbing and descending steep stairs and vertical ladders
• Be away from medical attention for up to 3 months
• Repeatedly lift and carry up to 50 pounds
• Share spaces with others including crew quarters, dining areas and bathrooms

• Option to extend contract up to 90 days
