What do successful business people and top-level athletes have in common? They set goals. Setting personal goals can be an intimidating process, however, having goals set can help further your motivation and turn your vision into reality. Perhaps you don’t know what you want from life, or haven’t set any formal goals for yourself.
Before you start to plan specific short-term goals, try setting some big picture goals (goals you want to achieve in your lifetime). These big picture goals will help you with decision making in the future, as well as help you set short-term goals.
When setting lifetime goals, consider the following categories:
Do you want to be a parent and have your own family? If so, what type of parent do you want to be? How do you want to be perceived by your partner and other family members?
Have you always wanted to learn about a specific topic? What information and skills do you need in order to achieve this goal?
Where would you like to end up in your career? How far do you want to advance, and what skills and/or training do you need to do so? How does this relate to your educational and family goals?
How much money do you want to earn in your job? How does this relate to your career goals?
Take some time to think about these questions, and create one or two lifetime goals for each category. When making lifetime goals, be sure that they are goals you want to achieve, and that you are not being influenced by others around you. If you want to be successful in achieving your goals, be sure they are something you truly want.

Now that you have created some lifetime goals, your next step is to create short term goals that will help you achieve your lifetime goals. Start by creating a five year, one year and then six month plan..
SMART goals can help you when you are planning your short-term goals. SMART can stand for a variety of terms, but generally stand for:
Once you have created your personal goals, you might want to consider creating a vision board. A vision board is a tool that can help you maintain focus on your goals. Usually a bulletin board or cork board, vision boards contain pictures that will help you visualize what will occur in your life.
