Assistant Cook in Unalaska AK

Assistant Cooks work aboard at-sea processing vessels in the Bering Sea, Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands. They report to the Head Cooks.

May work half of their shift in the Factory.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Prepare and cook family-style meals for crew
• Bake breads and pastries
• Assist the Head Cooks/Chief Stewards in the loading and unloading of food and other supplies into various storage areas located on various levels of the vessel
• Clean kitchen area, Galley area, kitchen equipment and utensils after meals, bathrooms, laundry for crew
• May supervise Galley Helpers in the performance of their duties on applicable vessels
• May order supplies and plan the menu taking advantage of foods in season and local availability
• May keep records and accounts of Galley Helpers who assist in meal preparation and serving

• Convert raw product being fished into a frozen-at-sea, marketable product ready for sale
• Sort fish by species, size and condition
• Tend and operate machinery
• Inspect product to ensure it meets North Star Fishing Company quality standards
• Package, weigh and label product
• Place product into freezers
• Operate and clean factory equipment
• Participate in offload of frozen product at end of trip
• Load and unload other supplies on the vessel

Physical Ability and Skills:

• Work up to 16 hours per day, 7 days a week in all kinds of weather conditions
• Understand instructions and safety rules in English
• Board and exit vessel without assistance by climbing up and down a gangway or Jacob&##39;s ladder
• Capable of climbing and descending steep stairs and vertical ladders
• Be away from medical attention for up to 3 months
• Share spaces with others including crew quarters, dining areas and bathrooms
• Perform repetitive tasks for long periods of time
• Repeatedly life and carry up to 50 pounds

Training and Other Requirements:

• Alaska Food Workers permit
• Blood borne pathogen training
• Must show evidence they&##39;re free of Hepatitis A
